Ms. Dorothy Middleton Walters

September 2, 1921 ~ April 29, 2019 (age 97) 97 Years Old

On September 2, 1921, in a house on what is now called High Bee Road, Dorothy Dicey Middleton Walters was born to the Late Rosa Hayes Middleton and Peter Middleton.

Dorothy was educated in the public schools of Richland County. She often reminisced about times she as a child had to work in the fields to pick cotton, shuck corn, and how she had to use lye soap as washing powder to clean their clothes. She worked for a while at the Fort Jackson Laundry until she was no longer able to work due to illness. She talked about how she took care of her grandmother, uncle, and her mother until their passing. At the golden age of 80, she could still jump rope and even at the glorious age of 97, she loved to clean her house and rake the yard.

At an early age, in a small creek behind what is now called Victory Hall, she was baptized and became a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church where she served faithfully on the Missionary Ministry and the Jubilee Choir. It was a joy to see her clapping, shouting and giving God glory saying “HALLEUJAH” and “PRAISE THE LORD”. Her favorite song was “Shine on Me” which during Sunday morning devotion service, you just might catch a little of her singing, still giving God the praise even at 97 years of age.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, James Walters; daughter, Vernell Taylor; two granddaughters, Authorine Middleton and Julie Barber; grandson, Karl Barber; five brothers, Alexander, Solomon, Peter, Phillip and James; and seven sisters, Pinkie, Rosabell, Annie, Viola, Ethel, Margaret, and Osha.

She leaves to cherish treasured memories her loving daughter, Mary Elizabeth Patricia Barr; a special loving niece (raised like a daughter) Albertine Howell; grandsons, Godfrey (Zanthia) Middleton, Verdell Barber, Peter Taylor, Evrin (Greta) Taylor, Kevin ( Kizzy) Barber, Timothy (Jacqueline) Barber, a special grandson John T. (Vonda) Howell; granddaughters; Sherenthea , Brenda Barber, Lisa (Henry) Anderson, Dorothy Renee (William) Young, Jamekia Taylor, Felesha (Samuel) Coleman; a special granddaughter Libby Renee (Andre) Davis; 41 great grandchildren, 56 great, great grandchildren, 9 great, great, great grandchildren; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
