Evelyn Waiters was born May 3, 1927, to the late Deacon Frank Waiters and Deaconess Estelle
Anderson Waiters. She entered into God’s eternal rest on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at her home
eight days before her 97 th birthday. Today, May 3, 2024, we celebrate both her birthday and her
homegoing.
Sister Evelyn, affectionately known as “Evas”, “Ebbis”, and “Iyah”, was educated in the public
schools of Richland County and attended Silver Dune School. She was employed by the Bartlett
Family for most of her adult life, retiring in the late nineties.
At an early age, Sister Evelyn joined Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church in the Killian Community of
Columbia, South Carolina. For most of her life, she served as an active member attending
Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and singing on the Jubilee Choir. In her most recent
years, she was a Sick and Shut-In member and was included in the Senior Adults Ministry.
Sister Evelyn was devoted to her family and friends. She and her sister, Margaret Hunter, made
the family home a welcoming haven for many who needed care and encouragement. She loved to
cook, especially for Thanksgiving and Christmas. She will always be remembered for her bread
pudding, candied yams, ambrosia, and other dishes. She also enjoyed planting and tending to
potted plants. The Hostas she planted and nurtured many years ago still flourish today.
Sister Evelyn was enrolled in the Palmetto Senior Program (now Prisma PACE) by her sisters
after she began to experience health challenges. There she received comprehensive medical care
and experienced social interaction. In 2010, this became her “second home” and she looked
forward to attending during the week.
Sister Evelyn was a woman of quiet, yet deep and steady faith in God which showed in the ways
she loved and cared for her family and others. She read and cherished the “Our Daily Bread”
devotional booklets and greeting cards that she received regularly from Pastor Rock E. Sims and
the Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church Family. When she could no longer read them herself, she
would listen attentively as family members would read them to her.
In addition to her parents, Sister Evelyn was preceded in death by her brother, Bishop James A.
Waiters of Atlantic City, NJ; and five sisters, Alberta Waiters, Estelle W. Sharp, Catherine W.
Stephens, Emma W. Jefferson, and Margaret W. Hunter.
Sister Evelyn leaves to cherish her legacy and precious memory her sister, Dr. Ruby (Deacon
Rufus) Watts; nieces, Patricia J. Martin, Sharon Watts Brown of Rock Hill, SC; Gayle K. Reese,
Janice “Brenda” Jamison of Columbia, SC, and First Lady Mary A. (Bishop Billal) Parrish of
Atlantic City, NJ; nephews, Elder Brian J. (Evangelist Lachelle) Watts and Kerwin B. (Chenial)
Watts; grand-niece, Kesha B. Waiters; great-grand-niece, Kayla T. Perry; great-grand-nephew,
Rodney Perry; and a host of other loving relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
Happy Birthday and Happy Homegoing, Evelyn!
