SFC Austin Gipson died peacefully on September 12, 2020 with his family by his side. A Veteran of the Vietnam War, Austin was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Vietnam Civic Actions Medal. Mr. Gipson was born on May 28, 1932 in Summerton, South Carolina. He was educated in the Clarendon County School District at Scott’s Branch High School and, upon graduation, enlisted in the U.S. Army.
SFC Gipson retired with full honors in 1974 and, after taking a few months off, was hired in a civilian capacity at the Moncrief Army Hospital until his full retirement in 1994.
Austin was a faithful member of his hometown church of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton, South Carolina, under the leadership of Pastor William T. Johnson, until his health started to decline. Austin was also an active member of VFW Post 4262 Gandy-Griffin and American Legion Post 215 in Columbia, South Carolina.
Austin is survived by his wife, Otha Holmes Gipson, of Columbia, SC; one daughter, Candace Gipson, of Charlotte, NC; one step-daughter, Tonya Holmes, of Columbia, SC; one sister, Alma Cooper, of Sumter, SC; one brother-in-law, Willie J. Holmes, of Columbia, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
