Valery Joy Aarons affectionately known by her family as Joy was born on December 31, 1946 in
St. Andrews, Jamaica West Indies to the late Mildred and Alfred Aarons. As a child Valery loved going to
school and church and spending time with her family.
Valery migrated to the United States in 1968. Upon arriving to the states Valery worked in modeling, at
Woolworth and Mr. J Fashions. A few years later Valery began working at Chase Manhattan Bank as a
Supervisor. While working at Chase Valery began working on her associate degree at New York City
Community College. After obtaining her Associates she continued her education at Long Island
University where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Valery worked at Chase for 25 years.
After leaving Chase Valery worked at the Internal Revenue Service as an auditor. She worked at IRS until
her retirement in 2011.
Valery loved the Lord and accepted him at an early age. Valery was introduced to Lenox Road Baptist
Church by her friend Daphne. Valery became a member of LRBC and dedicated herself to the church and
serving the Lord. Valery served as the church treasurer for many years. She later led the Senior Ministry
which she loved. She met many wonderful people and had many experiences with her seniors and the
senior ministry team. The annual Christmas Social was her favorite. She would ensure that every senior
had a wrapped gift that they could open at the social.
Valery loved life and she lived it to the fullest. She loved meeting new people, and she loved traveling.
Valery visited many places such as China, Africa, Amsterdam, London, Paris and many other places. She
was ambitious and goal oriented. She was never afraid to speak her mind although she could be a little
too honest at times. Valery was always willing to help and teach people how to invest their money and
or make financially wise decisions. Valery loved her family, and she maintained many positive
relationships with friends whom she has had for well over 40 years.
Although symptoms began in 2016, in 2020 Valery was diagnosed with a rare degenerative brain disease
called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Even in her decline Valery watched her talk shows, soap operas,
and LRBC every Sunday morning. When in New York she would call her god daughter Carla Fearon or her
friends who were like sisters, Daphne Maitland and Sonia Cunningham to go on the road. She still
enjoyed visiting and traveling with her sister Yvonne and her nephew and niece in love Rohan and Erica.
Even until her final days Valery enjoyed life to the best of her ability. she still laughed when she heard
“the tea” from her special niece Shanice Henry. Valery was genuinely a delightful person, and she will
be missed by so many.
