Ms. Pearline Robinson Obituary

Mother Pearline Johnson Robinson

Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.

Proverbs 31:10

Pearline Johnson Robinson was born September 13, 1940 in Eastover, South Carolina to the late Isaac and Jesse Bell Johnson. Pearline transitioned to her heavenly home on February 28, 2021. Affectionately known as “Pearl,” she was known for her witty comments, love of reading, writing and the arts. After graduating from Webber High School in 1959, Pearl attended and graduated from Allen University with a bachelor’s degree in Education. Pearl’s first teaching job was in the York County Schools. Desiring to be closer to family, one year later, she returned to the Lower Richland area to teach at Hopkins High School. She also worked at Gibbes Middle School before returning to Webber, where she taught English until her retirement. Pearl was a proud Webber Eagle, instilling the same pride in her students. Pearl was known to her family as an excellent wordsmith and English expert. Her younger family members always appreciated having her as a cheerful and willing proofreader and source of advice on term papers, book reports and the like. After retiring, Pearl worked at the Eastover Branch of the Richland County Public Library to stay connected to students and the community. Pearl especially enjoyed story time at the library. She had a unique ability to bring each book to life, capturing the attention and hearts of library patrons, both young and senior. Pearl received Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. As a member of St. Phillip A.M.E. Church, she served faithfully for more than fifty years. She extended her voice on the choir, served as a Steward and organized annual Christmas and Black History Month events for her church family. Even though she could not attend church in person, Pearl and long-time bible study mate, Kiziah Goodwin, spent each Wednesday night exploring God’s word during Zoom bible study. Pearl’s only child and beloved son, Darius Maurice Robinson, was born to the marriage of Pearl and her former husband, the late Francis Robinson. Pearl love watching Darius play sports and participate in various activities while he was growing up. Darius showed talent early as a prolific artist, and Pearl always supported and encouraged his creativity. Many of Darius’ drawings still hang in Pearl’s home. Pearl loved spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed an especially close relationship with her aunt, Rhudine Robinson, who was more like a sister. Where you saw one, the other was usually not far behind. Always eager to thoughtfully debate, Pearl particularly enjoyed roundtable discussions on politics, Christianity and race. She artfully crafted her position on an issue and always spoke her mind with poise and conviction.

Despite her declining health, Pearl maintained an unmatched optimism until the very end. Whether traveling to dialysis or relaxing at home, Pearl’s days were filled with listening to various genres of music through her headphones, reading, and crossword puzzles. She was always a joy to be around and her presence will truly be missed by all. Pearl’s loved ones will miss conversing with her, hearing her infectious laugh, and eating her famous potato salad and delicious peach cobbler. Her cooking left an indelible mark on the lives of many, including Ronald Harris, a lifelong friend, who visited Pearl frequently and always left with extra cobbler just for him. Pearl’s spirit will live in each of us forever. We will remember her constant final words each time she departed from a loved one, “I love you much.”

Those left to celebrate Pearl’s life and cherish precious memories are her loving son Darius Robinson (Soren) of Vancouver, WA.; goddaughter and faithful caregiver, LaShaun Brawley of Hopkins, S.C.; aunts Rhudine W. Robinson, Emma Lee Scott and Virginia Washington of Eastover, S.C; aunt Flossie Johnson of Hopkins, S.C.; uncle, Hoover Johnson of Columbia, S.C., and a host of cousins, close relatives and friends whom she held dear to her heart.
