Sister Mary Lavatter Nellams was born on November 15, 1956 in Columbia, South Carolina to the late Perry and Edna Mae Nellams. She departed this earthly journey on Friday, May 15, 2020.
Sister Mary was a diligent and caring employee of the Richland County Public Library for thirty years. Due to exemplary job performances, she received a Special Service Award for her many years and contributions to Richland County Public Library’s core goals and mission.
Sister Mary was a member of the Progressive Church of Lord Jesus Christ, Inc. in Columbia, South Carolina. She had a quiet and humble soul. She never met a stranger and greeted each, whether visitor or employee, with a warm infectious smile. Her tender heart and cheery attitude left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered.
Sister Mary was a staunch advocate for animal rights and a passionate reader. She also loved watching history and mystery movies.
Sister Mary leaves to cherish her precious memory to a brother, James Henry (Janie) Williams; a sister, Beverley Williams (Bruce) Leeper; three nephews, Steven William, Sterling Leeper, and Sean Williams; two great-nephews, Mica J. Williams and Jack H. Williams; her beloved fur pal, KoKo; a very special cousin, Alice Givens; a close friend, Robert Salley; her church family, members of the Progressive Church; and a host of other loving relatives and friends whom all will miss her dearly.
