Mary Rumel Battle, age 96, passed away on September 21, 2024 at MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center Downtown in Columbia, SC. Mary was born on August 6, 1928 in Early Branch, South Carolina to the late Leroy and Mary Williams. She was lovingly known to her family as ‘Dutt’.
From her marriage to Thomas Battle, a daughter and son were born: Patricia and Blake. The Battles made their home in Columbia, SC. Mary dedicated her life to Jehovah God and was baptized on May 5, 1959 as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She attended the Central Congregation in Columbia, SC for many years and began her full-time ministry career as a regular pioneer in 1999. In June of 2016 she was assigned to the newly formed Forest Drive Congregation in Blythewood, SC.
Mary will be dearly missed by her family and all who loved her. She will be remembered as a nonagenarian with an abundance of loving-kindness, a devotion to her God, Father and Friend Jehovah, and a bold courageous spirit.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Thomas Battle, her loving daughter, Patricia Ann Hofer; four brothers, Leroy Williams (Annabel), Jessie Williams (Lorine), Jeffery Williams (Hellen) and Herman Williams (Rosa); two sisters, Anna Malloy (Robert); and Adeline McFadden (Booker T) all of Columbia, SC.
Her legacy of love will live on through her son, Blake Battle and his wife Jeanette of Columbia, SC; two grandchildren of New York, Kelli Dione Battle, and Blake Battle, Jr; her only great-granddaughter, the love of her life, Brooke Mone’t Battle; youngest brother, Thomas Williams (Emma); a host of nieces, nephews, and her beloved spiritual family.
