Gwendolyn Fay Davis was born on December 27, 1951 to the late Robert and Idell Eldridge in Newark, New Jersey. Fay as she was affectionately known as attended Newark Elementary Schools, and Westside High School. Lady Bug as her daughters called her, worked as a welder for several years at Dans Welding Company, Doremus Toys Company, and Bardleys Department Store all in Newark, NJ. She also worked in the Newark Public School Systems and Samuel Berliner Alternative School Systems until her retirement in 2009 after 33 years of service working in the Food Service Department.
Fay loved cooking for her family and friends. She was also a well-known caterer for the City of Newark. Fay was always requested to caterer for events held for the City of Newark because of her famous banana pudding, 7-up cake, and her make you want to slap your momma macaroni and cheese.
Fay was a lover of the 70’s soul music. Some of her old-time favorites were listening to R & B singer Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass, and Al Jarreau. She loved watching the oldies but goodies show, like the cowboy movies. She faithfully watched the Little House on the Prairie and The Waltons every day.
Fay found joy in helping others and was available to help any way she could. She has passed that gift onto her daughters. She had a bond like no other with her grandson Marquis. Those two shared a very special bond. Marquis was her main man. Fay was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey and when she relocated to Columbia, South Carolina, she attended Agape Worship Center with her devoted daughters located on Lee Road until her health declined.
Fay was preceded in death by her parents, 1 brother Thomas Brown, and 2 sisters Katherine Eldridge and Sandra Horn; one grandson Jason Walker and one great-grandson Achylles Williams.
Fay leaves to cherish her memories: 2 daughters Araina Brown and Lue (Ben) Walker all of the home; 1 sister Jacqueline (James) Barnes of Rockingham, NC; 1 brother Robert Antwan Finney (Tatia) of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren: Marquis (Na’dya) Brown of Union, NJ; Alicia (Bryan) Mobley of Tifton, GA; Derek (Tanyanne) Walker of Ashburn, GA; Brandon Bennett of Atlanta, GA; and Arnell Walker of Tifton, GA; 19 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and a special sister friend Phyllis Kane of Newark, NJ.
