Dorothy Mae Carraway Williams was born on December 25, 1932 in Lamar, South Carolina to the late Elley and Elease Dubose Carraway. She departed this earthy journey on Tuesday, February 18, 2020.
Dorothy was educated in the public schools of Darlington County. She graduated from Spaulding High School with honors. She attended Voorhees College and later graduated from Benedict College in 1954.
At an early age Dorothy became a member of Sandy Grove UMC in Lamar, South Carolina. She later joined Francis Burns United Methodist Church in Columbia, South Carolina where she faithfully attended until her health declined.
Dorothy was employed with the Department of Mental Health and after many years of service she retired as an educator in the Department of Disability and Special Needs. She also volunteered as a Grandparent for Richland School District One elementary schools.
Dorothy dedicated her life to her children, family, friends and community. She was actively involved with various organizations within her church and her community. At church, she served as a Communion Steward, an Officer of the United Methodist Women, the Usher Board, Girl Scout Troop Leader, and several other duties. In her community, Dorothy served diligently with the North 21 Community Organization, the National Association of Colored Women’s Club, and was a board member of Palmetto Senior Care. She was also a board member, volunteer and teacher at the Bethlehem Community Center. She also enjoyed serving as a Poll Manager for Richland County.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Earl Williams, Jr.; parents, Elley and Elease Dubose Carraway; siblings, Eula Lee June and Robert Rivers; and three sons, John E. Brisby, III, James Counts, and Thomas E. Williams.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her precious memory her three daughters, Shelia (Thomas) Kelsie, Antonnia M. Brisby, and Doris B. Geiger; son, Antonio Williams; ten grandchildren, Chelsea Shell, Bridgette (Colavito) McKie, John (Shamarla) Brisby, IV, Shanna Brisby, Ira Sumrall, Myra (Raymond) Reyes, Cheyenne Thompson, Marcus Sumrall Ernest Thompson, John Thompson, and Isaiah Williams; eight great-grandchildren, Colavito McKie, Christian (Deondra) McKie, Caniyah Sumrall, John Brisby V, Amaya Sumrall, Alaya Richardson, Isaiah Williams, Xzavier Martin; three sisters-in-law, Sara Williams, Betty Rivers, and Betty Smith; one god-daughter, Lisa McCullogh-Hughes; beloved family pet, “Coco”; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
