Ms. Catherine Choice

Catherine "Cat" Choice began her beautiful journey of life on Saturday, October 13, 1956 in Sumter, SC and passed peacefully, after an extended illness, sixty-three years later on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at Prisma Health - Richland.  She was the daughter of Albertha Choice Hale and the late David Loyd.

She was a lifelong member of Wayman Chapel AME Church, Sumter, SC where she served faithfully in many capacities, until her health failed, including the Jubilee Choir, Stewardess Board #4, Church School Class #5,  Daughters of Allen (served as Chairperson), Ministry of the Un-churched  (served as Chairperson), Athletics Ministry, the Wilhemenia Sweetheart Burgess Missionary Society.  She was also  instrumental in forming the Young Adult Missionary Society (YAMS).   

She graduated from Hillcrest High School - Dalzell, SC (Class of 1974) and  Central Carolina Technical College (formerly Sumter Technical College)  - Sumter, SC, earning an Associate Degree in Business Administration.  Catherine was employed with  WIS International (Columbia, SC) as an Area Manager and utilized her artistic gifts and abilities as a great Wedding Coordinator and Event Planning Consultant.

Catherine loved all sports, especially  the NFL's Dallas Cowboys and the NBA's LA Lakers.  She played softball with numerous teams to include: the Expo Explosions, C&S Braves, and the Sumter County DSS Night Softball League.  As an avid bowler, Catherine was a lifetime member of the Sumter Bowling Association and was an active participant with several leagues to include:  the Hot Shots, Friday Night Mixed, Sumter County DSS Mixed (served as Director and President) and South Carolina State University Bowling Team (served as the Statistician).  She was an assistant coach on the 1996-97 Lakewood High School 4A Girls Basketball Championship Team, and one of the first women to coach for the Sumter County Parks and Recreation Flag Football team.

In addition to her father, Catherine was preceded in death by her grandparents who reared her  - John Henry Choice Sr. and Sallie Choice.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories, her heartfelt mother Albertha Choice Hale of Sumter, SC; an affectionate son Darfirio F. Choice of Summerville, SC; two loving grandchildren, Zentrina D. Choice and Darfirio F. Choice II both of Sumter, SC; three steadfast aunts, Louise Hunter of Vineland, NJ,  Elease James (her "Ma Lease") of Sumter, SC and Bessie Loyd  of Bridgeport, CT; one Grand-Aunt Elnora Gathers of Sumter, SC; two adoring Godchildren, Dwan Gathers and Jaylon Bracey both of Columbia, SC; a loving, loyal, and devoted cousin who was with her to the very end, Deirdre Robinson of Columbia SC,  four special cousins, Patricia Bracey and Barbara Adams both of Sumter, SC, Rodney (Ivy) Robinson of Dalzell, SC, and Darryll (Cynthia) Gadson of Durham, NC,  and cousins she considered her siblings, Teresa (Willie) Bracey, Betty (Michael) Bolden all of Sumter, SC,  Perry (Faith) James of Charleston, SC, Byron James of Gambrills MD;  a former daughter-in-law  who was  "like a daughter," Zentra Green of Sumter SC; her beloved four-legged companion-dog, Jacque of Sumter, SC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. 

The Family has decided that a memorial service will be held at a later date in order to adhere to the  guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)  - in reference to the COVID-19 Pandemic.  Expressions of sympathy and/or condolences may be sent to Albertha Hale at 5905 Cane Savannah Road, Wedgefield, SC 29108.
