Ms. Carol Marie Battee was born the eldest of twins on July 30, 1962 in Columbia, South Carolina at Columbia Hospital. She was the daughter of the late James Mitchell Battee and Betty Ruth Pope Battee. She went to be with our Lord on July 6, 2020 while at home.
Carol was educated on several different military bases, including Germany and in the public schools of Richland County in Columbia, South Carolina. She attended Eau Claire High School and graduated from W.J. Keenan High School, Class of 1980. She attended Bladen Community College in Dublin, North Carolina and Eastern Carolina Vocational School where she was certified as a Nurse Assistant. Carol joined the U. S. Army National Guard in 1988 and was an Army Food Service Specialist (MOS 92G). She was honorably discharged in March of 1997.
Carol worked as a Juvenile Correctional Officer for the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. She also worked at several assistant living facilities and restaurants.
Carol was fun, loving, caring, and touched the lives of many. She always had a good story to tell with enthusiasm and much animation. Carol enjoyed family gatherings; she was the life of the party and always insisted on lending a helping hand. Carol had a concern for everyone she knew. She would give you her last, even if it meant that she would go without. Carol had a strong belief in her faith and loved the Lord. Her favorite scripture (she quoted often) was Matthew 8:23-27 “Peace Be Still” and she would say “Much Love.” Carol also loved traveling, music, and her dog Lady.
Carol lived in Monterey, California for a few years where she met the father of her children, Paul Kennedy of Orangeburg, South Carolina. Together, Carol and Paul survived the earthquake of 1989 before moving back to Columbia, South Carolina. Carol had many friends who became her family and were always loving and supportive: Darlene Davis, Chrishele Andrews-Bernard, Kim Wright, Conchitha Jones, Tammy Dickens, Marlene Davis and Kim Carree.
In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her natural father, Alexander Johnson and brother, Alexander Johnson Jr.
Carol is survived by her son, Alexander Japaul Kennedy of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Brittany Michelle Battee (Muhammad Shabazz) of Dallas, TX; grandson, Alexander Japaul Kennedy Jr. of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter, Yuri Yesenia Battee-Taylor of Dallas, TX; niece, Asia Zhane’ Battee (who Carol affectionately named “Newty Newt”) of Charleston Air Force Base, SC; brothers, Carl Maurice Battee of Columbia, SC, James Wendell (April) Battee of Fayetteville, NC and Tyrone (Dianna) Deloach of Columbia, SC; sisters, Patricia Johnson Powell and Cynthia Johnson of Durham, NC, Renaute (Greg) High of Elizabethtown, NC, Jennifer Johnson (Ricky) Cash of Bowie, MD and Janice Michelle (Derick) Whitten of Columbia, SC; aunts Barbara Pope Coleman-Dixon and Lottie McDowell of Philadelphia, PA; an uncle, Deacon John Coleman both of Columbia, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and family that will miss her dearly.
