Susie Lee Gale Wilson was born on March 7, 1942, in Louisburg, North Carolina. She was the only child born to William and Susanna Egerton Gayles. She departed this earthly journey on December 26, 2021, surrounded by her loving family in Greenacres, Florida.
Susie was always an active member of her church. She attended Allen Chapel Baptist Church in her youth and later became a member of Macedonia New Life Church in Raleigh, North Carolina where she sang on the church choir. After graduating Riverside High School in Louisburg, North Carolina she attended St. Augustine and Shaw Universities in Raleigh where she majored in Early Childhood Education. Susie later moved to Brooklyn, New York where she worked as an Assistant Teacher for a church daycare center. Later she enrolled in Brooklyn City College and began counseling battered women in the community. While in Brooklyn she met the love of her life, Isiah Wilson. She and Isiah were married in July 1969 and three years later, they welcomed their only daughter, Regina.
Wanting to raise their daughter among family, Susie and Isiah relocated with Regina and made their home in Raleigh, North Carolina. There, Susie began her career within the North Carolina Department of Corrections as a Corrections Officer at the North Carolina Correctional Institution For Women. Susie lived her life following the words of her grandfather, “Treat others how you would want to be treated.” She demonstrated this as she supervised inmates during their incarceration as they worked in various state-sponsored activities. She even supervised a program for teenagers within the system. She treated them with care and compassion, but she was also fair and firm. She felt that everybody deserved to be treated with respect, but she made it clear that she always in charge. Her motto was, “Work the job, don’t let the job work you.” She was never jaded by what she saw. She retained her compassion and respect for all people. She retired from the prison system in 2002 after twenty-three years of exemplary service.
Susie found many pleasures in life. She was an avid reader, she enjoyed travelling, interior design, and spending time with those she loved. Her first love, however, was fashion. She loved clothing and approached each outfit as a statement. Beyond all of this though, was her love for others. The care and understanding she had for others were boundless. Helping others in need gave her immense joy and she loved to hear the laughter of those around her.
In addition to her parents, Susie was preceded in death by her husband, Isiah Wilson; and her aunt with whom she was raised as a sister, Lucy Arrington.
Susie leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Regina (Carlita) Wilson, of Greenacres, FL; step-granddaughters, TaiMikiela Thomas of Portland, OR, and JeVoi Blount of Decatur, GA; step-daughter, Shelia (Henry) Williams of Hopkins, SC; step-granddaughter, Angela (Joseph) Grant of Savannah, GA; half-sister, Sadie (Bernard) Cooper of Oxford, NC; half-brother, Victor Gale of Oxford, NC; cousins, Bertha (Joseph) Martin of Atlanta, GA, Rickey (Debra) Arrington of Raleigh, NC and Sincere Arrington, of Raleigh, NC; lifelong friend Doris Branch of Youngsville, NC; and a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
