Geraldine Arceneaux - renowned artisan and consummate family woman - died after a long, love-filled life and ardent fight with cancer in Columbia, South Carolina on May 12, 2024. She was 80 years old.
Geraldine Savoy was born on January 28, 1944 in Crowley, Louisiana, the firstborn daughter of Leo and Pearl Savoy. She was a member and student of Saint Theresa Catholic Church and school. Her education continued at Ross High School in Crowley. Geraldine married John Wallace Arceneaux of Crowley, Louisiana on January 7, 1965 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Beaumont, Texas. Married 59 years, four months, and 5 days; together they traveled the United States and the world making homes in: Texas, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Germany, and Panama as a military family. In 1967, the couple welcomed their first child, LJubica into their home, and welcomed their second, Jerel, in 1974.
A devout Catholic, Geraldine called Saint Martin de Porres Catholic Church of Columbia her spiritual home and community. Geraldine is remembered by many for cooking and her talents as a crafter. She spent years establishing herself across the region as an expert crafter and entrepreneur of her wares. Among her many talents were cooking, sewing, crocheting, needlepoint work, and dollmaking. She was passionate about her genealogy research and believed that to move forward you must know the past. Her proudest accomplishments were the growth of her family and seeing both of her children attend and graduate from college.
She is preceded in death and awaited in heaven by her parents Leo and Pearl Savoy, her grandparents Albert and Rose Henney, her brothers Percy Savoy and Ferdinand Savoy, and her aunts Margaret Martin and Versey King.
Those left to cherish Geraldine’s memories are her husband, John Wallace Arceneaux; her daughter LJubica (Don); son Jerel (Manisha); and grandchildren Taylor Marie, Jacob Avery, Danielle Grace and Morgan Ann, sister Juanita (Robert) Robertson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly.
