Catherine “Cat” Archer Kelly, a beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend was born on February 8, 1952, and peacefully departed from this earth on September 29, 2024 after a brief illness.
Catherine's journey began in the warm embrace of Ann Fripp Community, nestled in the Sea Islands of South Carolina. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in St. Helena Island, SC and later transferred her membership to Second Nazareth Baptist Church in Columbia, SC. Raised by her loving parents, Lewis “Tony” Archer and Queen Esther “Sister” Scott Archer, Catherine was one of five sisters and three brothers. She is predeceased by her sisters, Cathleen Archer (Isaac) Randolph and Irene Archer Major, and her brothers, Franklin Archer, Lewis Lee “Charlie” Archer and Joseph “Pete” Archer. She leaves behind her sisters, Rachel Archer (Joseph) McNeil, Geraldine Archer (Deacon Johnnie) Major, and Frances Louise Archer, who will cherish her memory forever.
Catherine matriculated through St. Helena Schools in Beaufort County, where she was an active member of the basketball team, showcasing her athleticism and team spirit. Additionally, she played in St. Helena’s Marching Band under the direction of bandmaster Mr. Wesley Felix. She furthered her education at Mather College for nursing in Beaufort, South Carolina where she continued to build the foundation for her remarkable life.
Her career began at the SC State Hospital in the mid '70s, where she worked as a nurse before pursuing her passion for barbering. She attended The Patterson School of Barbering in Columbia, SC and rose to become a master barber and instructor. A trailblazer in every sense, Catherine was a rare gem—a female barber who defied the odds in a male-dominated field. Catherine was the first and only female barber at Stroy’s Barber Shop on Assembly Street in downtown Columbia, SC. In 1990, with determination, vision and the support of the Archer Family, she opened Cat’s Barber Shop and the Nail Clinic School of Manicuring on Blanding Street, becoming the first female African-American proprietor in downtown Columbia.
Cat’s Barber Shop was not just a place of business but a second home where she raised her two daughters, Kimberly Kelly Brantley of Columbia, SC, and Dr. Lola Kelly (Dr. Eppechal) Smalls of Maineville, Ohio. Her legacy extends through her four grandchildren: Katelyn Kelly-Morris, Kellynn Chalice Smalls, Archer Tavarha Mia Smalls, and Eppechal “EJ” Smalls, Jr., all of whom carry forward her spirit and zest for life.
As a long-time member and leader in the Palmetto Barber’s Association and the Order of the Eastern Stars, Catherine was deeply respected in her community. She was known for her sharp wit, no-nonsense attitude, and leadership skills. She was a Godmother to many, offering guidance, love, and support to all who needed it. Her influence as a barbering instructor shaped the careers of numerous on-the-job training students, many of whom have gone on to become successful barbers and entrepreneurs in their own right.
Catherine was married for almost 49 years to her devoted husband, Deacon William Kelly, Jr., who stood by her side through every triumph and challenge. She is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends, and clients who cherished her unwavering support and mentorship.
Catherine “Cat” Archer Kelly’s life was a testament to resilience, innovation, and community. She leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and unwavering dedication to family and friends. Her memory will forever be a beacon of strength and inspiration to all who knew her.
