Mrs. Candy Barr Bowen was born on July 21, 1964, in Columbia, South Carolina to Otis Barr, Jr. and Mattie Kennedy Barr. In 1982, Candy graduated from C. A. Johnson High School. Candy continued her education at the University of South Carolina where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism and Marketing.
Candy was reacquainted with Stephen Bowen in Jacksonville, Florida. The two were united in marriage on November 13, 1999, and to this union, Hope Noelle Bowen was born.
Candy was an active member of The Bethel Church, where she served in the Health Ministry and choir. She was very active with Hope as a Girl Scouts’ mom for 10 years. Candy became a Toastmaster with Toastmasters International. She was also a former member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). Candy was previously employed by St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medtronic. At the time of her death, she was employed with Brooks Rehabilitation as a Communications Specialist.
Candy was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Otis Barr, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Barr; and maternal grandparents, Tommie Lee McGraw, and Miner Kennedy.
Candy leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 21 years, Stephen M. Bowen; her loving daughter and mini-me, Hope N. Bowen; parents, Otis (Kathy) Barr, Jr. and Mattie Kennedy Barr; two brothers, Otis N. (April) Barr and Kelvin Barr; one step-sister, Regina (Jason) Ricks; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Nancy M. Bowen; two brothers-in-law, Kelvin C. (Sabrina) Bowen and Kalvin C. Bowen; two sisters-in-law, Stephanie M. Bowen, and Pamela D. Bowen; five nephews, Christopher Barr, Kelvin Bowen, Jr., Nicholas Feldser, Darius Ricks, and Jaylin Ricks; two nieces, Chloe Barr and Kaitlyn Bowen; best friend “sister”, Gail Trezevant-Span; one goddaughter, Danielle Span; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
