Mrs. Bessie Martin Obituary

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." – 2 Timothy 4:7

With hearts full of love and gratitude for a life well lived, we celebrate the homegoing of Bessie Louise Martin, a mighty woman of God, who transitioned from labor to reward on March 4, 2025, at the blessed age of 75.

Born on June 13, 1949, in Vallejo, California, Bessie was the second of four children born to Jessie and Birtee Thomas. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, her brothers Willie “Ray” Thomas and Jessie W. Thomas Jr., her sister Carrie Lynn Landers, and her devoted husband, Kenneth K. Martin.

Though Heaven gained a worshiper, Bessie leaves behind a legacy of love and faith in her family. She is survived by her sister-in-law Mrs. Rhonda Thomas (wife of Willie Ray). Her Four children: Ronell D. Voice, Andrew L. Nelson Sr., Carlee L. Nelson Sr., and Tamisha D. Locks (Sidney)—each of whom she covered in prayer and nurtured with unwavering devotion. She was also a proud grandmother to 15 grandchildren, a doting great-grandmother to seven great-grandchildren, and a pillar of wisdom, strength, and encouragement to a host of nieces, nephews, god-children, friends, and loved ones.

A Life of Service & Dedication

Bessie was educated at Vallejo Senior High School, Class of 1966, She worked as a Sheet Metal Mechanic and Engraver at Mare Island Naval Shipyard and Alameda Naval Air Station, where she played a vital role in the maintenance of nuclear submarines and naval aircraft. She worked with excellence and precision, proving that her gifts extended far beyond the walls of the church.

But it was her Kingdom work that revealed her heart and soul for the Lord. She was an active and faithful member of Center of Faith COGIC, where she served in the choir, Usher Board, Intercessory Prayer Team, and various outreach ministries. Even as her journey took her across the country—from Vallejo CA  through Jackson MS to Hephzibah, GA, and finally to Waldorf, Maryland—her faith never wavered. She worshiped at Interfaith Christian Center, Revived Spirit Ministries, and then Harmony Baptist Church (alongside her beloved husband). She later obtained spiritual covering at New Community COGIC under watch care..

Bessie, also lovingly known by her middle name “Louise”, did not just worship—she warred in the Spirit! A fire-baptized, Holy Ghost-filled intercessor, she would stop to pray for and with anybody, anywhere, anytime. Even when she was unable to speak,we believe her spirit continued to intercede, testifying to God’s goodness until her last breath.

A Life of Creativity & Excellence

Her hands were blessed, and everything she touched became an expression of beauty and excellence. As a talented seamstress, she designed custom clothing, hats, drapery, and wedding dresses with intricate detail. As an artist, she painted antiques and home décor, created custom greeting cards, and engraved plaques and awards for churches, the community and abroad. She used her gifts to uplift others, leaving a creative legacy that continues to inspire.

Beyond artistry, she was gifted with athleticism. She was a ran track, played softball , a pom-pom girl. She even dabbled a little in drag racing! She was also an avid gardener, where she not only nurtured plants for herself and others, she shared her wisdom and passion for growing things—a true representation of how she cultivated love, faith, and strength in all those she encountered.

A Warrior’s Legacy

Bessie Louise was a Woman of unshakable faith, unconditional love, and unstoppable determination. She was a Road Warrior—ready to drive anywhere, anytime, until her feet could no longer press the pedal. She was a Prayer Warrior—interceding for souls until words no longer came forth. She fought, prayed, loved, and worshiped with her whole heart until the Lord called her home.

While our hearts ache, we rejoice in knowing that she now rests in glory, reunited with her loved ones, and worshiping at the feet of Jesus.

"Well done, thou good and faithful servant... enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." – Matthew 25:23

May her prayers continue to cover us, her faith inspire us, and her love remain in our hearts forever.
