Mr. William Ramseur Obituary

William S. Ramseur was born on September 15, 1929 in Lincolnton, North Carolina, to the union of the late John Lee Ramseur and the late Lois McDaniel Ramseur. He was taken to his final rest on May 12, 2021.

Mr. Ramseur served his country in the United States Marine Corps and was a member of the Montford Point Marines, the first African American recruits in the Marine Corps trained at Montford Point, North Carolina. They were honored by the United States Congress with the Congressional Gold Medal. He also served our country as a member of the United States Air Force.

He was a 60+ year member of Elks (IBPOE of W) Lodge 611 and served in several leadership positions at the local, state, and regional levels, including Exalted Ruler, Past Grand Exalted Ruler, 1st VP of SC Elks, and Director of Education for Elks Region 4. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the 92nd Buffalo Soldier Chapter 20 of the South Carolina Disabled American Veterans. He also served many decades as a volunteer at the Chapel of the William Dorn VA Hospital.

In addition to his organizational affiliations, Mr. Ramseur was also known for putting his entrepreneurial spirit into action in his public accounting business and his shoe repair shop, The Shoe Groom, in the Arcade Mall on Main Street.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Burke Ramseur; second wife, Emma Sanders Ramseur; daughter, Cheryll Ramseur Green; a son by marriage, Walter McClain; grandson, Julian Gerard Green; and 5 brothers, Joseph Marcus, Cecil Alexander, John Lee, Jr, Charles Lewis, and Travis Bernard Ramseur.

William leaves to cherish his memory his three daughters, Gloria Ramseur Dixon, Cynthia Ramseur (Joseph) Reddix, and Sheila Ramseur (Warren) Scott; two daughters by marriage, Lynn McClain (Rudy) Harris and Cynthy McClain Mixon; one brother, Harvey (Jenifer) Ramseur; two sisters, Christine Ramseur Boone and Geraldine Ramseur (Elvin) Logan; one special nephew, Joseph (Darlene) Ramseur; two special sisters-in-law, Freda Ramseur and Agnes Burke; 10 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
