In Loving Memory of William Marvin McHaney
December 23, 1944 – April 25, 2025
William Marvin McHaney was born on December 23, 1944, in Gibson County, Tennessee, to the
late John Robert McHaney and Hattie Catherine Pack McHaney. He was the fourth of eight
children.
William attended Motley and Phillip Elementary Schools in the Oak Grove Community and
graduated from Stigall High School in Humboldt, Tennessee, in 1962. At an early age, he
professed his faith in Christ at Oak Grove Baptist Church. He later continued his spiritual
journey at Divine Deliverance Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he was baptized in Jesus’
name by Bishop Claude and Pastor Mary Meadows. There, he received the gift of the Holy
Ghost in accordance with Acts 2:38.
After moving to Columbia, South Carolina, William remained devoted to his faith by regularly
attending services via the Divine Deliverance PHC Conference Line. Recognizing his steadfast
commitment, Bishop and Pastor Meadows helped him find a local church home. He became a
faithful member of Rehoboth United Church under the leadership of Pastor David Lorick, where
he worshiped faithfully until his health declined.
From a young age, William worked hard, laboring in the fields while still attending school.
Shortly after graduating, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served his country
honorably for 26 years and retired in April 1991.
He was united in holy matrimony to Kathryn Spann. Together, they blended their families and
lovingly raised five children. William enjoyed life’s simple pleasures: watching
football—especially his beloved Arizona Cardinals—fishing, caring for animals, and pursuing
photography. He also loved traveling with his family and watching classic westerns.
William was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margarette Katherine Pack and
Pamela Denise McHaney; and one brother, Robert James McHaney.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 45 years, Kathryn McHaney; five loving
children: Tony McHaney, Fredrick McHaney, Helicia McHaney, Tamisha Spann, and Rondy
Spann; seven grandchildren, including a special granddaughter, Tranyce Spann, whom he deeply
adored. He is also survived by three sisters: Evelena (Royal Lee) Smith, Shellie Ruth (Thomas)
Brown, and Mary Laverne (Claude) Meadows; one brother, Willie Calvin McHaney; and a host
of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
William Marvin McHaney lived a life rooted in faith, service, and love. He will be deeply missed
and forever remembered.
