A Life of Celebration
Robert K. Mackey, lovingly known as ‘Bobby’ was the oldest boy of six children born October
23, 1945, in Chelsea, Alabama to Willie James Mackey and Mattie Mae (who preceded him in
death), also preceding him in death was one sister Diane Jones. God opened the gates of Heaven
to call home our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin,
family member, and friend on February 16, 2025, at Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia,
South Carolina surrounded by family.
Robert graduated from Carver High School in Gadsden, AL in the early 60’s, where he continued
to move around frequently as his father was in the military. Following in his dad’s footsteps,
Robert enlisted in the Unites States Army in 1965, beginning his 20-year military career
traveling around the world to many duty stations including Vietnam, Korea, Germany and many
state side locations. Within his military Robert completed Instructor Training, Principles of
Counseling, Advanced NCOES, and Battalion Training Mgmt. Systems. Along with continuing
his education while in the military Robert was able to obtain his AA degree from Georgia
Military College, a Bachelors and Master’s degree. Continuing his journey in communication he
received ‘Top Secret’ clearance for Telecommunication-Electronics Crypto. After traveling
around the world Robert finally retired as Sergeant First Class (E-7). Robert embodied
compassion and selflessness in his communication even when he took ill in his later years and
wasn’t able to speak fully he still was able to communicate with his eyes, and body movements.
In the 60’s, Robert married Gloria Jones and to this union two children Samanthia and Kolen was
born.
In May of 1974, Robert married Renee’ Burrell-Solomon and to this union he adopted her two
children LaChone and Done’, the couple enjoyed fifty years (50) years of marriage.
An avid golfer, Robert has acquired many trophies and awards from numerous golf tournaments,
mostly in California. The family and friends enjoyed regular vacation retreats to Moncks Corner,
SC at the US Navy Short Stay Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and also enjoyed playing
Pinochle for hours as well as hosting parties with his friends. Known for his loving, giving spirit,
he always put the needs of others before his own. A devout follower of the Christian faith, he
exemplified grace and kindness throughout his life.
Robert memories will be cherished by: one daughter LaChone (Glenn) Jeffcoat, of Columbia,
SC, one son Done’ Mackey, of Columbia, SC; four grandchildren; LaToya Mackey, of Raleigh,
NC, Kelli Kinnitt, of Columbia, SC, Tyler Hunter, of Atlanta, GA, and Ryan McCarthy, of Elgin,
SC; as well as seven great-grandchildren; Triston, Kaliyah, Jordyn, Adam, Sara, Tyler, Ivy Rose;
two brothers James (Shelia) Mackey, of Macon, GA, Larry Mackey, of Gadsden AL; two sisters
Barbara (Clarence) Harris, of Oxford, NC, Shella (Joe) Simmons, Glencoe, AL and many other
relatives and caring friends, all to whom will miss him dearly. Robert will leave behind a legacy
of love, compassion, and adventure that will forever be cherished by his family.
