Mr. Lyles Williams Obituary

Mr. Lyles Williams, Sr., affectionately called “Peasy” was born September 5, 1933, in Columbia, South Carolina. He attended Saxon Elementary and is a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. Lyles joined the United States Army in 1953, and was stationed at Ft. Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina. In the early morning on Saturday, April 12, 2025, he departed this life into eternity.

Lyles joined St. James AME Church at an early age. He was a lifetime and faithful member until his health declined. Through his commitment and dedication to his church, he served as a Trustee and choir member. He was quick to contribute to any organization within the church. He was devoted and worked tirelessly to ensure all aspects of the church were met, inside and outside. His passion was making phone calls daily. He would pray for you, check on the sick, and give words of encouragement, comfort, and love. He did this because he loved the Lord and believed in the power of prayer.

Lyles favorite Bible verse was Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Lyles married the love of his life, “Lucy Gal” on February 21, 1954. They have been married for 70 years. To this union three daughters and two sons were born. Lyles was employed by Colonial Stores Warehouse until retirement. During this time, he and his two sons owned a janitorial business, where he worked serving the Columbia area.

Being involved in the life of the community was important to him. He loved attending neighborhood meetings, supporting activities for the youth and always lending a helping hand. He loved the togetherness of family. Spending time with family gave him the opportunity to touch others’ lives in a profound way.

Lyles was preceded by his parents, James and Mable Williams; two sisters, Mozelle Powell and Annie Mae Argo; one brother, James Williams, Jr.; and one grandson, Keldrick William Hayes.

Lyles Williams, Sr. leaves to cherish his loving memory with his beloved wife, Lucy Mae Williams; three daughters, Valerie (Matthew) Whitaker, Beverly Hayes, and Kecia (Gregory) Watson; two sons, Lyles (Vera) Williams, Jr. and Stanley (Eva) Williams; his sisters, Thomasina W. Corbett, Catherine Weedon, Lillie James, Frances (Matthew) Addison; sisters-in-law, Mary Williams, Shirley Ellison, and Jeanette Haskell; a brother-in-law, Thomas (Betty) Jackson; twelve grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and caring friends; all of whom will miss him dearly.
