Herbert Wardlaw Wilson was born April 21, 1948 to the late Herbert and Cleo Wilson of Dalzell, SC. He was one of seven children. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Ann Taylor and his brother, Henry Wiley. He was known by many names, Herb, Daddy, Pops, Unc, and Waddy. He claimed his initials, “HWW”, stood for Hard Working Wilson. His hard work included farming, driving a school bus at 16, US Air Force service, social work, and he ultimately retired from the SC Department of Corrections after 20 years. Throughout his work he always enjoyed working construction on the side, even having his own business, Whistle Wilson Home. He was educated in the South Carolina public school system, and later received a master’s degree from Oklahoma University.
Herb never met a stranger and would speak to anyone. Even when he was driving, he would frequently flick his wrist and a couple of fingers to give a quick wave to a stranger passing by. He enjoyed life, lived life on his terms, and he thought that others should do the same. He typically would say I’m going to enjoy myself, and you should enjoy your life.
He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Wanda (Calvin) Moss of Queens, NY, Nikki Gilmore of Columbia, SC, Yvonne (Quintus) Young of Irmo, SC, and Herb (Rachel) Wilson of Irmo, SC; four sisters: Vivian Geter of Durham, NC, Jessie Mae Bradshaw of Dalzell, SC, Betty (John) Browne of Columbia, SC, and Mary Neal of Brooklyn, NY; a loving companion, Linda Green of Dalzell, SC; eight grandchildren, one great granddaughter; two brothers-in-law, Don Taylor and John Browne; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
