Mr. Herbert Roosevelt Hill, Sr.

September 2, 1942 ~ January 1, 2019 (age 76) 76 Years Old

Herbert Roosevelt Hill, Sr., affectionately known as “Herb”, “Top”, “Master Blaster” and “First Sergeant”, was born on September 2, 1942 to the late Curtis and Lavonia Hill in Burkeville, Virginia. He gracefully transitioned from this earthly home to be with our Lord on January 1, 2019.

Herbert dedicated his life to Christ and was baptized at an early age at the Gravel Hill Baptist Church, Jetersville, Virginia.

Herbert was educated in the Nottoway County Public School System and was a graduate of Luther H. Foster High School where focused on agriculture. While in high school, Herbert broke ground and became the first male cheerleader in the Nottoway County School System.  Herbert joined the United States Army right after high school and served for over 27 years where he rose through the ranks very quickly. During his career, he was a highly decorated soldier serving in the Vietnam War. He also severed with Special Forces, the 82nd Airborne as Drill Sergeant and as First Sergeant. He was stationed abroad many times with his wife and children accompanying him. 

Herbert met and later married the love of his life Gamalia Ann in 1964, a union that lasted 54 years until she transitioned to be with our Lord.  To this union two children were born, Stephanie Hill and Herbert Roosevelt Hill, Jr.

In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by his wife, Gamalia Ann; one sister, Bertha Epps; four brothers, Joseph, Harvey, Pete and William Hill; and grandson, Darius Mallory.

Herbert leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his precious memories, his daughter, Stephanie Hill; son, Herbert (Bobbi)  R. Hill, Jr. both of Columbia, SC; six grandchildren, Harviar Pryor, Shamene Jones, Jaylon Pryor, Brian Green, Heath Miller and  Alexandrea Cloud, all of Columbia, SC.; two sisters, Edith (Mearl) Smith and Lucy Gordon, all of Virginia; one brother,  Calvin(Ina) Hill, Sr. of Virginia; two sisters-in-law,  Diane Evans and Patsy Evans of Durham, NC.; twenty-eight nieces and nephews, Jerry (Jackie) of Atlanta, GA, Sharon (Isaiah), Robbie, Vhondrena, Carlton (Wanda), Jody (Phyllis), Calvin, Jr. (Theresa), Wendell, Sharon, Gloria, Debbie, Cheryl (Winfred), Cynthia (Fred) Patricia and Linda all of Virginia; Lois, Ruby (Leroy), Winona, Nicole, Debbie and Harvey, Jr. all of Baltimore, MD, Bernae (Daryl) of Jacksonville, FL, Brittany (Jerahmie), Anitra, Renita, Kokeya, Franklin and Devin, all of Durham, NC; seven godchildren, Catrena, Latonya,  Willie Jean, Jacqueline, Irene, Wendell (Jackie),Tyrone (Claudia) all of Columbia, SC; and a host of other loving family members and friends.
