SFC Henry E. Swittenberg, Jr. was born July 7, 1935, in Newberry, SC to the late Henry E., Sr. and Essie Swittenberg. Henry entered heavenly rest on April 2, 2021.
Henry enlisted in the United States Army and served his country meritoriously, earning the prestigious Purple Heart Medal of Honor. After completion of his honorable military service, Henry became employed with the SC Department of Corrections, where he remained until his retirement. Henry delightfully enjoyed the company of family and friends, all of whom he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his late wife, Dorothy (Dot) Swittenberg.
Sargent Swittenberg leaves behind to cherish his precious memories his son, David C. (Margaret) Land Sr. of Columbia, SC; five grandchildren, David C. Land, II (Joycelyn), Devin Land, Davette Waden, Tonique Brown, and Tenese Gunter-Escobar, all of Columbia, SC; two sisters, Eloise Swittenberg-Thomas and Mary Thomas, both of Newberry, SC; two brothers, Bobby (Gloria) Guider and Charlie (Valerie) Guider, both of Columbia, SC; two nephews, Leroy and Keith Simons, both of Newberry, SC; one great-nephew, Rodney Simons of Newberry, SC; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews all who will miss him dearly.
