Henry Gene Mender was born on April 11, 1945 to the late Lottie Mae Mender Boykin and Mr. H. Walker. He was raised in Columbia, South Carolina.
Henry, affectionately known as “Lollipop”, attended Florence E. Benton Elementary School and Booker T. Washington High School. After graduating, he began his career with Turner Asphalt and Paving where he was employed for fifteen years. He was later employed by Carolina Wrecking where he worked until he became ill. He was a very dedicated worker who loved his job and fellow co-workers.
Henry was a father and grandfather. He loved his children and grandchildren. He took great joy in spending time with them.
In addition to his parents, Henry is preceded in death by his son, Henry Gene Mender, Jr., and his wife, Annie Sue Mender.
He leaves to cherish his memory his two daughters, Shell Mender and Brittney Portifield; two sons, Darkira Portified and Bryan Portifield; one step-son, Hadie Keller, Jr.; a devoted companion, Betty James; nineteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and a host of loving relatives and friends.
