Gary Anthony Martin was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 5, 1948, to the late Elmo Cline Martin and Virginia Alma Louise Knoll. He died peacefully on June 13, 2022, at Prisma Richland Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina, surrounded by family.
Gary was a 1966 graduate of Jackson High School in Jackson, Missouri, and was a member of DeMolay International youth fraternity. He was also an Eagle Scout. Gary played the trumpet in the JHS Marching Chiefs band and for the Southeast Missouri State University Golden Eagles marching band. He also served in the U.S. Navy Reserves on an expeditionary force to Vietnam on the U.S.S. Mahan and was a member of the SEMO Vets Corp.
He enjoyed a career in retail management and was the owner of Anthony’s Big & Tall store in Jackson. He opened and managed two Walmart stores in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and was involved in several charitable efforts.
Gary was always a jokester who enjoyed time with his family, golfing, grilling, boating, dogs, the Carolina Gamecocks, and time at the beach.
In addition to his parents, Gary was predeceased by his stepfather, Marvin D. Tierney.
Gary is survived by his wife Stephanie Jackson; a daughter, Brittany Martin Hartman of Rock Hill, South Carolina; a granddaughter, Harley Grace Hartman of Rock Hill, South Carolina; a sister, Susan Martin Seabaugh (Jim) of Jackson, Missouri; two stepsisters; a stepbrother; a niece and nephew; and two great-nieces.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
