Charles Edward Scott, Sr., affectionately known as “Charlie”, entered the world eventfully when he was born in an elevator on September 2, 1938, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was the son of James Scott and Jeanette Mims. Charlie gained his independence from this earthly home on July 4, 2024.
Charlie was educated in the public schools of Richland County, South Carolina and was a proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1959. He furthered his education at Benedict College. Charlie was an exceptional athlete who enjoyed playing several sports, particularly football and track and field.
Charlie met the love of his life, Dorothy “Dot” Dickerson in 1964 and the two happily wed on March 31, 1965. They were blessed with two handsome sons, Charles Edward, Jr. and Travis Marcellus.
Charlie was a dedicated employee of Richtex Brick. He matriculated to the Shakespeare Monofilament Division and worked as a quality control analyst. In 2004, after more than 30 years of service, Charlie retired from Shakespeare. He was revered by his coworkers at Shakespeare for his softball skills. Charlie consistently hit home runs and caught fly balls with his bare hands.
One of Charlie’s favorite pastimes was sports. He was an avid bowler and a devoted Atlanta Braves fan. Charlie truly believed that Muhammad Ali was the greatest boxer of all time and would frequently watch his old boxing matches on television as if it were his first time. He also enjoyed watching old Westerns, Matt Dillon, Bonanza, and Good Times.
Christmas was one of Charlie’s favorite holidays; he blessed his sons, nieces, and nephews with many gifts to express his love. Charlie loved his family fervently and was a great provider and protector. He passed those traits on to his sons, who love their wives and children in the same way.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, James Scott, Sr. and Jennett Mims; and siblings, James Thomas Scott Jr., Roosevelt Scott, Hoover Mannan, and Corrine Harmon.
Those who remain to cherish Charlie’s memory are his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Dorothy Scott; his loyal sons, Charles (Michelle) Edward Scott, Jr. and Travis (Agnes) Marcellus Scott; grandchildren, Tayla Arianna, Charlean Ann-Louise, Kaitlynn Símone, Camille Elise, Gracie Kayowa, Sarah Mulong, and David Mulabi; siblings, Mildred (Erskine) Mills and Bernard Simmons; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
