Mr. Carrol Steven Bowers was born on February 3, 1967 to Mrs. Jettie M. Bowers and the late Mr. Robert J. L. Bowers, Sr. in Prosperity, SC. He was educated in the Richland County School District 1 and graduated from C.A. Johnson High School in 1985. He then enlisted in the United States Army to serve his country faithfully including risking his own life to serve during Operation Desert Storm. He served in the military for many years until his retirement.
Mr. Bowers lived a life dedicated to serving others including his family, friends, community and beyond. He adored his two granddaughters even calling himself Papa Karter Rose. He was heavily involved in various church and community service roles here in Columbia, SC and abroad. He coached youth recreation baseball and basketball, including coaching his nephews in both sports. He was a Prince Hall Mason and a former member of the NAACP Executive Committee, Columbia Branch. He was a dedicated Elder at Life Living Ministries and lead and participated in many ministries including the Men’s Ministry, Praise Team, Drama Ministry, Technology and Communications Ministry, and the Boys to Men Ministry. He also was the church’s Santa Claus, a Sunday School teacher and originated the church’s annual Unity in the Community events. He volunteered with Harvest Hope Food Bank and served those in our community who needed food assistance.
He was a certified mechanic and was able to fix just about anything on a car and a motorcycle. In addition, he was a handyman and could do any home improvements that were needed. He was an avid fisherman and often took fishing trips to Florida just for the sport and love of fishing. He loved sports but was a life-long Washington Redskins (Washington Commanders) fan often travelling to games to support his team.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brothers Mr. John Mark Wise and Mr. Robert J. L. Bowers, Jr, and grandparents Ms. Nadine E. Bowser, Mr. Roosevelt Wise, Mr. Arthur Bowers and Mrs. Melvina Bowers.
He leaves a fond legacy and cherished memories with his mother Ms. Jettie Bowers of Columbia, SC; daughters Dr. Stephanie Sharperson Curry, MD and Ms. Kierra Bowers Graves of Columbia, SC; granddaughters Caitlyn E. Curry and Karter Rose Graves both of Columbia, SC; his sisters Ms. Gale Bowers-Nash, Elder Lisa (Elder Karlton) Dixon and Ms. Paula Bowers all of Columbia, SC; his nephew and one of his best friends Mr. Antonio Paurice (Necole) Clarkson of Palm Bay, FL; nephews Mr. Brodric (DeAnna) Dixon of Simpsonville, SC, Mr. Branson (Alexis) Dixon of West Columbia, SC and Mr. Cody Bowers of Columbia, SC; aunts Ms. Carolyn Wise of Columbia, SC, Ms. Sener B. Davis, Ms. Deborah McLeod, and Ms. Vivian Hunter all of Chapin, SC; grand-niece Emerie Dixon; grand-nephews Joshua Clarkson, Braylen Dixon and Avery Dixon; bestest friends Mr. Ronald Davis of Chapin, SC, Mr. Furman Allen, Jr. of Blythewood, SC, Mr. Jacob Jenkins, Jr of Elgin, SC, Mr. Vernon Forbes, Mr. James Noble, IV and Mr. Joe Smith all of Columbia, SC; and a host of other family and friends who willcontinue to carry on his legacy of dedicated love and support for his community.
