Mr. Bernard James Obituary

Mr. Bernard James was born on September 12, 1954 in Columbia , South Carolina. He was the youngest child of the late Charles James, Sr. and Ernestine Edmonds James. He departed this life on Friday, May 24, 2024, at the Memorial Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. 

Bernard attended schools in Columbia, SC, Richland School District One; Waverly Elementary School, W. A. Perry Junior High School, and 10th grade at C.A. Johnson High School, then being rezoned to A.C. Flora High School. He graduated from A.C. Flora High School in 1973. After graduation, he entered the United States Army, where he served his country for 12 years. After getting out of the military, Bernard worked at the Ft. Stewart, GA Welcome Center as a federal civil service administrator until he retired. He then worked several years as a federal contractor in administration.

Bernard grew up at First Nazareth Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina. He was baptized at a young age. Between his military duty assignments, he served on the Senior Usher Board at First Nazareth. He had a relationship with God and knew God as his Savior. He believed with all his heart that the Lord was taking care of him.

In 1973, Bernard began dating his lifetime sweetheart, Cynthia Woodhouse. They were married in October 1975 and had three children, Nicole, Corey, and Edward, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. When Bernard wasn’t working, he liked to spend time golfing with his many friends.

Bernard was preceded in death by his grandparents, June B. and Florine Edmonds, Murray Sr. and Virginia Chapman James, his father, Charles James, Sr., and older sister, Virginia James.

Bernard James leaves to mourn his passing: his mother, Mrs. Ernestine James of Columbia, SC, wife, Alberta Cynthia Woodhouse James, daughter, Nicole James, two sons, Corey James and Edward James, all of Hinesville, GA. One sister, Mrs. Vivian (David) Allen of Columbia, SC, two brothers, Charles (Edna) James, Jr. of Virginia, Beach, VA, and William James of Minot, ND. One aunt, Mrs. Evelyn Edmonds of Columbia, SC. Two brother-in-laws, James (Francie) Walker of South Chesterfield, Virginia and Aubrey Woodhouse of Columbia, SC, and one sister-in-law, Yvette Woodhouse of Columbia, SC, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.
