André Frederick Mitchell was born on March 9, 1953 in Thomasville, Georgia to the late Lawrence R. Mitchell, Jr. and Emma L. Mitchell. He departed this earthly journey on October 30, 2023.
André graduated from Roosevelt High School where he developed many friendships that were maintained throughout his life. André married Kris Vidal (Payne) in 1972 in Hempstead, NY and they were married for 10 years.
André worked in a number of roles during his lifetime but was most proud of his service in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, during which time he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
Later in life, André gained tremendous proficiency in Taekwondo, rising to the rank of third-degree Black Belt. André looked forward to hearing from family and friends each day and he was especially close with his mother, Emma Mitchell, with whom he spoke nearly every day. Her support sustained him for more than 70 years. His walls were decorated with pictures of, and mementos from family, especially his granddaughters, who brought him much joy.
André was preceded in death by his father, Larry.
André is survived by his mother, Emma Mitchell of Columbia, SC; son Shaka (Stephanie, Ph.D.) Laurence Mitchell, Esq., of Nashville, TN; three granddaughters, Emma Ruth Mitchell, Hadassah Joy Mitchell, and Vera Salem Mitchell, all of Nashville, TN; two sisters, Laurie Mitchell-Amos, of Newark, NJ, and LaToya Mitchell, of Freeport, NY; and many loving cousins, relatives, and friends.
