Mother Elsie Mae Mitchell

Elsie was born on December 29, 1938 to Katie Mae Mynhier Garrett and Sterlin B Garrett in
Menifee County, Kentucky. She departed this life on July 30, 2025.
She graduated from Du Bois High School, in Mt Sterling, Kentucky in 1956. After graduation, she
relocated to New York, New York with her Aunt Elsie Bates the same year. They relocated to
Columbus, Ohio in 1957. She married her husband Hubert Mitchell on August 24, 1962, to this
union 2 children were born. They eventually moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1970.
Throughout her life, Elsie was a devoted member of the church, remaining faithful in her
spiritual walk wherever she lived. She joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, St Luke Baptist Church
and Shiloh Baptist Church all in Dayton, OH then upon relocating to Columbia, SC she joined
First Nazareth Baptist Church, where Blakely N. Scott Pastor in January 2010 continuing her
commitment to her faith and community.
Professionally, she served as a dedicated clerk at Rinks and Elder Beerman department store
1970-1983, clerk/manager where she received the highest perfect audit report to State of Ohio
Department of Liquor Control 1984-1995 and Dayton Metropolitan Housing Authority 1996-
2002. She also worked diligently in janitorial services contractor Northern Virginia Services
Corporation 1996-2002 (Federal Building, Wright Patterson Air Force Base), Hillel Academy
2003-2008, Roderer Law Offices LLC 2006-2009 and Miami Valley Hospital 2008-2009. Her
strong work ethic and willingness to take on any task reflected her unwavering determination
and humble spirit.
Family was the center of her world. She cherished every moment spent with her children and
loved ones, and found immense joy in the presence of her grandchildren and great-
grandchildren, whom she adored deeply.
Her life was a testament to faith, hard work, and love for family — values that will continue to
inspire all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Sterlin and Katie Mae Garrett, children’s
father/husband Hubert Mitchell, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, sister and brother in-
laws and special friends Mildred Hammond, Helen Gilmore and Janet Paschal
Elsie leaves to cherish her memory: 3 children daughter Kay Mitchell (Joseph Robinson)
Columbia, SC, 2 sons Otis Mitchell and Kevin (Kathy) Belcher Dayton, OH, 13 grandchildren, 16
great-grandchildren, 1 sister Joan (John Michael) Farmer, Dayton, 1 sister in-law Mary Powell
Chicago, IL, 3 Godchildren Kellie McDole-Martin and De’Onee Thurman-O’Bryant Columbus and
Raymond Talbott III Dayton, OH, nieces, nephews along with a host of extended family
members, friends, and loved ones who were touched by her kindness, strength, and
unwavering love.
