Wanda Ashford Longshore was born July 28, 1942 in Columbia, SC. She is one of six children of the late Rev. Lionel Ashford and Bernice Clark Ashford. She departed from this life on December 28th, 2023.
Ms. Longshore was baptized and joined Temple Zion Baptist Church at a young age. She sang in the Sunshine Band, attended Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and the Missionary Society with her mother.
She was educated in the Richland One School District, attending Ridgewood Elementary, Booker Washington High School and graduated from CA Johnson High School. She later married and joined her husband in San Diego, CA with their three children.
In California, she joined the Pilgrim Progressive Baptist Church. After the death of her husband, she later studied and received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from San Diego State University and her Doctoral degree in Psychology from UCLA in Los Angeles.
Dr. Longshore worked as a social worker for the county of Los Angeles. She owned and operated Sierra Academy, a private high school. She also operated two Ashford group homes in Altadena and Pasadena, CA. Upon deciding to move back to Columbia, SC , two of her foster children Honey and Michael joined her. Upon her return, she reunited her membership with Temple Zion Baptist Church. While teaching at Prosperity Elementary she met and later married Robert Longshore. Dr. Longshore became quite involved singing in the Jubilee Choir, attending Sunday School and later appointed Superintendent of the Sunday School program.
She is the author of three books: The Declaration of Self Evident Truths, No Child Left Behind, and the Three Little Pigs. The Declaration of Self Evident Truths is a now a textbook used on several college campuses and translated in many languages.
She was preceded in death by her parents Rev. Lionel and Bernice Ashford, brothers Kenneth and William Emory Ashford, sister Barbara June and her dear son Lionel Todd Ruff.
She leaves to mourn her passing, her daughter Trina Lyn Ruff of Las Vegas, NV, son Troy LaMar Ruff (Margo) of Long Beach, CA, daughter-in-law Amber Jane Ruff, 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren, two sisters Jean Ligons and Donnie Ashford, husband Robert Longshore and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
