Dr. Barbara Hazzard Obituary

Dr. Barbara Louise Brown Hazzard was born November 18, 1943, in Newberry, South Carolina.
She was the daughter of the late Mr. Oze Brown and the late Mrs. Helen Davis Brown. After an
extended illness, Barbara’s prayer to rest in heavenly peace was answered on Thursday, April
25, 2024.
She was raised in Columbia, South Carolina in the Waverly neighborhood and attended
Richland District One schools. During her early years, she attended Carver Elementary and
W.A. Perry Middle School. She graduated from C.A. Johnson High School as a member of the
Class of 1962, having served as the Senior Class President.
Barbara attended the Freedmen’s Hospital School of Nursing at Howard University where she
earned her Nursing diploma in 1964. After returning to South Carolina, she earned her Bachelor
of Science in Nursing from the University of South Carolina’s School of Nursing in 1974. A
passionate advocate for education, Barbara obtained her Master and Doctorate in Religious
Studies from Grace Christian Bible College in Columbia, South Carolina.
She had a rich career in Nursing, primarily in the mental health field, and retired after 30+ years
of service to the SC Department of Mental Health and the State of South Carolina.
Prophetess Barbara loved the Lord and was a good and faithful servant. She was a member of
Miracle Deliverance Outreach Ministries (MDOM) for over 26 years where she served as an
Elder in the house of the Lord. She was a key figure in the congregation through her work with
the Singles’ Ministry, Wednesday Night Bible Study, Sunday School of Wisdom, Tuesday
Prayer, and Ministers’ Training.  As Prophetess of the House, under the anointed power of the
Holy Ghost and without reservation, she ensured that God’s Word was heard and that His
message was conveyed to the people of God.
Barbara found joy in spending time with her family, traveling, and meditating on the word of
God.
She is predeceased by her mother, Mrs. Helen Davis Brown, her father, Mr. Oze Brown, Sr., her
brother, Mr. Oze Brown, Jr., her former husband, Mr. Emerson J. Hazzard, Sr., her daughter,
Ms. Valorie D. Hazzard, and her son, SFC Emerson J. Hazzard, Jr.
