Dr. Alex Colavito Mills, affectionately known as “Poochie”, was born on November 18, 1964 in Columbia, South Carolina to the late Reverend Alf Mills, Jr. and Lucretia TyAnne Dawson Mills. Alex departed this life on Monday, June 29, 2020. He was preceded in death by his father, Reverend Alf Mills, Jr.
Alex was educated in the public schools in Richland County and graduated from CA Johnson High School, Class of 1983. Alex then attended the University of South Carolina and also studied at the University of Maryland, later obtaining his Ph.D. in Risk Management from the University of Texas at Dallas. Alex later served in the United States Army. Alex had a great love for the United States Army, serving both stateside and abroad.
After being discharged from the military, Alex became an insurance agent later opening up his own Nationwide Agency. Over time, he would come to open his own business known as Mills Group and Associates.
Alex was very active in the community. An exceptional mentor, father, husband and son, there was never a birthday or special date that would get passed him. He always contacted others to wish them a blessed birthday. He was a mentor to many and shared wisdom and knowledge to help keep young people on the path of progression. He never met a stranger. He was always kind with his words and pure with his intentions.
Alex leaves to cherish his precious memory, his loving and devoted wife of twenty-three years, Sharolette M. Mills; four sons to carry the legacy, Sean A. Mills of Georgia, Dominique R. Mills of Texas, Brandon A. Mills of Texas and Darius L. Mills of Texas; his mother, Lucretia Dawson Mills of Columbia, SC; two uncles, Sammie (Grace) Mills of Albany, GA and Jeffrey (Sophie) Mills of Cairo, GA; four aunts, Martha Neeley of New York, Mary Louise Daniels of Atlanta, GA, Mary Thomas of Waycross, GA, Frances White of Atlanta, GA; one god-son, Bryce Williams of Atlanta, GA; a god-brother, Jonathan Shuler of Columbia, SC; a god-sister, Keisha McDaniel of Orlando, FL; life-long family friend and business partner, Gene Boykin of Columbia, SC; special friends of the family, Richard Simmons and Carolyn Paige of Columbia, SC; a host of cousins, relatives and friends, all whom will miss him dearly.
