William Fairley, a beloved husband, father, and community pillar, was born on August 4, 1947, in Mississippi to William and Leola Fairley. As the eldest son, William grew up with a strong sense of responsibility and commitment that would define his life.
The Fairley family relocated to Columbia, South Carolina, where William received his formal education in the Richland County Public Schools, graduating from C.A. Johnson High School in 1965. Driven by a desire for discipline and direction, William enlisted in the U.S. Navy, a decision that marked the beginning of his lifelong dedication to serving others.
In May 1969, William married his high school sweetheart, whom he had known since the 8th grade. Together, they welcomed two cherished children: Chamarlyn Levelle and William “Trey” Fairley III. William’s devotion to his family was unwavering, and he prioritized their well-being above all else throughout his life.
As the eldest son, William developed a remarkable work ethic and a passion for overcoming challenges. His determination led him to become the first African American homeowner in the historically segregated Spring Valley community that did not allow “colored” residents. He resided in this home and community until his transition. The neighborhood is now diverse and still one the most developed and desired gated communities in the Columbia Area.
William enjoyed a successful career as a steel fabricator at Hewitt Robins for over 25 years. Following the company’s relocation, he seamlessly transitioned to multiple roles, including long-distance truck driver, school bus driver, and part-time Walmart shelf stocker, always with his family’s needs in mind, he felt it was his responsibility to put his children through college and support his ailing wife.
A fixture in the Greenview Park community, William was affectionately known as “Coach” for his years of dedicated service as a little league and tee-ball coach. His love for fast cars, particularly Chevrolet Chevelles, was well known among friends and family.
William was also deeply devoted to his faith and church community. He was an active member of Rehoboth Church, where he served as a Deacon and former president of the Brotherhood Department. His kindness extended to visiting and supporting elderly members, sharing stories and offering companionship. William had a way of making everyone who encountered him feel loved with no judgment and no conditions.
William is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Eloise Fairley; his parents, William and Leola Fairley; and siblings Willie Lewis Fairley, Jefferey Fairley, Earl Fairley, Cynthia Evans, and Lillie Mayes.
He is survived by his children, Chamarlyn Fairley and William Fairley III; siblings Carrie Tucker, Alfreda Banks, Dana (Joe) Anthony, and Al (Bobbie) Fairley; mother-in-law, Elease P. Lorick; sisters-in-law Maggie Fairley and Linda Fairley; brother-in-law Johnny Evans; as well as numerous in-laws, friends, and relatives.
