Deacon Thomas Thompson, Sr. Obituary

Deacon Thomas David Thompson, Sr. was born on July 2, 1952, in Lone Star, SC. He was the beloved
second son of the late Isaac Thompson, Jr. and Annie Mae Seawright Thompson. Thomas departed this life to
be with the Lord on February 4, 2025, at Dorn VA Medical Center.
Thomas was a 1969 graduate of Saint John High School, Cameron, SC. He was drafted into the
United States Army on November 11, 1972. While honorably serving his country, he worked as an Infantry
Indirect Fire Crewman. Thomas attended Midlands Technical College and studied Banking and Finance. He
received an associate’s degree from Rutledge College in Business Management. Thomas was employed by the
United States Postal Service, where he retired after a tenure of 30 years as a Mail Carrier. He has been
recognized by his customers for having an excellent attitude and providing superior customer service.
Thomas accepted Christ at an early age, where he attended Saint Luke AME Church in Lone Star, SC,
under the leadership of the late Reverend John Lee Davis. He served there as a faithful member, along with his
mother, father and brothers. Thomas was known as the “ gifted lead singer” of the Thompson’s Family Gospel
Group, always singing for the Lord. Thomas and his family then relocated to Columbia, SC.
Upon relocating to Columbia, Thomas joined Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church and was baptized by the
late Reverend Leroy Cain, Sr. Thomas served in many capacities within the church, to include the Male
Chorus, President of the Men of Zion, member of the Trustee Board, the Musical Choir (where he served as the
Assistant Chaplain and Treasure), and a member of the Pastor’s Aid Committee until his health declined.
In June 2011, Thomas was honored with a service award from his Pastor and church family for his
leadership and work ethic in the church. He often says that God get the glory for all his work in the ministry.
Thomas’ favorite scripture is Psalms 27:14, “Wait on the Lord and be of good courage and He shall strengthen
thing heart; wait on the Lord.”
Thomas, derived from Tom, is the Hebrew word for “twin”. He is confident, conscientious, likable and
down-to-earth. Thomas could fit in anywhere. He had a quiet sense of humor and demeanor. Thomas touched
the lives of so many people. He loved and was loved by all that knew him. He had an illuminating spirit that
would brighten one’s day. He was the most loving, caring and compassionate person one could ever meet,
greeting all with a smile; especially to his wife, Helen.
Out of all Thomas’ interests and past-times, he enjoyed spending time with his bride, Helen, who was
the center of his life. Their love was endearing and unconditional. During his spare time, Thomas enjoyed
fishing, traveling, singing, serving the Lord, attending MLK Day events, spending time with his family and
planting vegetables and flowers in his garden.
In addition to his parents, Thomas was preceded in death by his children, Thomas David Thompson,
Jr. and Emika Thompson; brothers, Isaac Thompson, III, Joseph Thompson, Sr., James H. Thompson and
Jacob Thompson; one sister, Mary Alice Thompson; maternal grandparents, Thomas Thompson and Lessie
Belle Dantzler; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Thompson, Sr., and his aunt, Daisy Thompson.
Deacon Thomas leaves to cherish fond memories with, his loving and devoted wife of 23 years,
