Mary Sumpter Gilliam-Scott, daughter of the late Jack Sumpter and Mary Aiken Sumpter, was born on March 16, 1947 in Gadsden, South Carolina. On Wednesday evening, June 5, 2019; God, in His infinite wisdom, reached down with outstretched arms and beckoned Sister Scott to come home. He peacefully took her hand for He knew that He would lead her to the Promised Land where she would be reunited with her beloved husband, Emmett Scott, who preceded her in death eight months earlier.
After graduating from Hopkins High School in Hopkins, South Carolina, Mary began working for the South Carolina Comptroller General’s Office. She attended the University of South Carolina earning an associate’s degree. In 1991, she decided to further her education and earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She graduated three days after her daughter earned her bachelor’s degree from Clemson University. Earning her bachelor’s degree at the same time as her daughter was one of her proudest moments.
Sister Mary Scott was a faithful member of First Nazareth Baptist Church and attended regularly, until her health declined.
Sister Mary Scott was a devoted mother and grandmother. She opened her heart and home to those in need. Although, she was a mother to some, aunt to others, and “Ms. G” to many, she was a sister to all.
Sister Mary Scott leaves a legacy of love and devotion to her daughter, Tiffany (Frank) Gilliam-Adams of Atlanta, GA; one grandson, Remington Drakeford Scott Adams of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Rosa Sumpter Williams of Columbia, SC; one brother-in-law, Harold (Mary) Scott of Maryland; one sister-in-law, Ruby Scott of Columbia, SC; four godchildren, Ashley Bouknight, Kendra Cunningham, Joshua Cunningham, and Diamond Trejo; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and very special close friends.
