Mrs. Inez Slater Obituary

Catherine “Inez” Slater was born on August 12, 1922 in Darlington, South Carolina to the late Edmond and Laura Jackson. She departed this life after a brief illness on January 4, 2020.

Inez graduated from Spaulding High School in Lamar, South Carolina.  She was married to the late James Slater and to this union 11 children were born, with three preceding her in death.  Inez held the occupation of housekeeper for many years. In her free time, she enjoyed cooking, traveling, and shopping.

Inez accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Bethlehem Baptist Church for 65 years.  She was active in several departments in the church including the Adult Sunday School Class, Bible Study Class, and Kitchen Committee. She was also an advisor for the first teenage choir formed at Bethlehem, formerly known as the C.A. Faulk Singers. Inez was a member of the Mamie Gadson Missionary Ministry and served as secretary for several years.  Being an avid reader, she worked with outreached ministries and assisted with collecting and distributing books for the Richland Literacy Program. She was also an active member of the Gethsemane and Southern Baptist Women Association where she faithfully visited various nursing homes, family shelters, and Oliver Gospel Mission. She also participated in Benedict and Zion Missionary Tea Fellowships. Throughout the years she received numerous awards for exemplary service in the community.

Inez loved the Lord and was determined to render her gifts and talents to Him. She believed in family values and enjoyed family gatherings where she prepared delicious meals that could not be replicated. Her favorite scripture was Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and He shall direct thy paths.” Her favorite song was “God Is”.

Inez was preceded in death by her husband, James Slater; two sons, Louis and Solomon Slater; and one daughter, Louise Slater Davis.

She leaves to celebrate and cherish her precious memory her children, Lerlene (Thomas) Martin of Columbia, South Carolina, Charles (Veronica) Slater of Accokeek, MD, James (Forrestine) Slater of Lawrenceville, GA, Eugene (Sheila) Slater of Columbia, SC, Arthur (Elizabeth) Slater of Columbia SC, and William, Rudolph, and Larry Slater all of Columbia, SC; one grandson raised in the home, Gregory Slater of Columbia, SC; one sister, Mary Peoples of Bronx, NY; 38 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends all of whom will miss her dearly.
