Mrs. Crystal Irene Garrett

Crystal Irene Garrett was born on March 17, 1982 in Montclair, New Jersey to Stephanie L. Garrett McKenny and Brian P. Starling.  Crystal departed this earthly journey on Sunday, December 2, 2018. 

Crystal lived with her loving grandparents, Dr. Earl “Poppy” Garrett, Jr. and Marian L. “Nana” Garrett, for many years in Montclair, New Jersey. During her early years, Crystal resided in New Jersey and later moved to Sumter, South Carolina. She attended Essex County Public Schools in Montclair, New Jersey. After relocating to Sumter, South Carolina, she attended Manchester Middle School and Lakewood High School. Crystal returned to New Jersey and completed her education at Montclair High School in 2000.  She later decided to move to Columbia, South Carolina, where she resided until her passing. 

Crystal was filled with joy and always had a positive attitude. She would brighten any room with laughter and happiness. She had a way of making everyone feel comfortable and left an impact on those she connected with. Those around her could always sense a high level of confidence. She was persistent and never took no for an answer if it meant something to her. She would always make the best of every situation. She was willing to help anyone in need and had no problem defending those she loved.

Throughout the entire battle with her illness, Crystal remained positive and would constantly say, “I’m already healed.”  Prior to transitioning to be with the Lord, she rededicated her life to the Lord and reconnected with her church home, The Love Center of Sumter.  At her church, she continued to grow spiritually to prepare herself for her heavenly home.

Crystal was preceded in death of her grandmother, Marian L. “Nana” Garrett.

Those left to cherish her precious memory are her beloved children, Nicole Rene Stone, Jasmine Michelle Garrett, Kymani Isaac and Keoni Isaac; her parents, Stephanie L. (Levern) McKenny and Brian Starling; two brothers, Josiah McKenny and Joseph McKenny; two sisters, Taraja Laws Joanie and Joya Starling; her grandfather, Earl “Poppy” Garrett, Jr.; two great aunts, Doris McLeod and Louise Wright; an adopted uncle, George Hunter; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
