Jimmy accepted Christ at an early age at Hillside Baptist Church in Roopville, Georgia. He moved to Columbia, South Carolina and joined Central Baptist Church in 2011.

He was married to Blanche Thornton in 1972 and from that union four children were born. He later married the late Annie Brewer in 1985.

In 2010, Jimmy suffered three strokes that resulted in him being placed at the V.A. Dorn Community Living Center where he resided until his passing. Despite his condition, Jimmy managed to make friends among the CLC staff and continued to love and laugh with his family.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Jimmy was preceded in death by his daughter, Shenette Brewer; his sister, Mary Sue Harrison; and his two brothers, Billy Brewer and Phil Brewer.
