Mr. Howard J. Smith

Howard was born on January 14, 1937 in Bayonne, New Jersey to the late Doris Everette. Howard passed away on August 26, 2019 at Pruitt Health Blythewood in Columbia, South Carolina.

Howard who was affectionately known as "Smitty" attended Cooper Jr. High in Harlem, NY and he graduated from Bayonne High School. He received a basketball scholarship to the University of New Mexico. He graduated from Jersey City State Teachers College where he earned a BA in Education. In 1960 he joined the U.S. Army.

Howard met and married Ann B. Williams over fifty years ago. Their union was blessed with four children: Howard, Jr., Valerie, Roland and Keith. Howard was an art collector and an avid tennis player. He was elected as Committeeman for Ward B in Jersey City for over 20 years. He was a supervising coach for Jersey City Team Post an after school program for students at PS #22.

Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Ann B. Smith and longtime friend Howard Fitch.

Howard leaves to cherish his life: four children: Howard Smith Jr., Valerie Mahoney (Damon), Roland Smith (Sandy) and Keith Smith; one sister: Adrienne Everett; our grandchildren (Shanelle, Jhanae, Nia and Angelina) and a great grand-child (Daijon); longtime friends, Elijah Powell and Gerald Glover and a host of nieces and nephews and other loving relatives, friends, and neighbors.
